Sketch: in 2021 and beyond

Today we’re excited to share some big updates to the Sketch platform. Here’s where we’re at, and where we’re headed next.

Our mission with Sketch has always been a simple one: to make the best possible tool for designers. We started this over ten years ago with a great Mac app — and since then, we’ve seen the importance of design grow exponentially.

Today, design involves everyone from developers and project managers to researchers and customers — and it defines some of the largest companies in the world. But our purpose remains the same: to give you a set of tools that help you get work done and support the entire creative process.

Today, design defines some of the largest companies in the world. But our purpose remains the same: to give you tools that support the entire creative process.

Over the past few years, we’ve evolved Sketch to be more than the Mac app. It’s now a fully integrated platform for design and collaboration, combining the best native Mac editor with tools that work in any web browser. Today we want to share a few highlights, what’s available in Sketch right now, and what you can expect from us in the months ahead.

Real-time collaboration, built for control and privacy

We quietly launched real-time collaboration a few weeks ago for subscription customers and we’ve been amazed by all of the wonderful feedback. Thousands of people are already using real-time collaboration in the Mac app to work together with coworkers every day. And now we’re making it available for everyone who wants it.

Real-time collaboration works with documents you share in your Workspace, but with the control and privacy features you’d expect from us; a drafts folder to keep work private until you’re ready to share, and a simple promise that we will not store, share or sell data about how you work. For example, neither us nor your manager can pull up a report that shows how long you’ve been working. Some products consider tracking like this a feature. We consider its absence a feature.

Workspaces: where people and projects come together

Workspaces are now at the heart of Sketch — bringing the Mac and web apps together, and giving you a home for all your work. Designs and projects you save in your Workspace are automatically available everywhere you use Sketch.

There’s no syncing or uploads to worry about, simply sign in and get instant access to everything you need.

When you share a Workspace with your team, everyone gets instant access to every document, project and Library. Everyone can view and discuss designs and prototypes right in their web browser. And Editors can easily open files in the Mac app to move work forward.

Collaborating beyond the Canvas and in the browser

With our cross-platform web app, anyone in your Workspace can view and test out prototypes, browse designs, and leave their feedback with comments — from any device. We’ve also built a full set of handoff tools, so developers can inspect designs and download production-ready assets, right from their favorite browser.

There’s no need to pay for extra apps or integrations to do any of this. Simply save a file to your Workspace and you’ll be able to make the most of all of these tools and features. Developers don’t even need the Mac app for handoff. Better still, you can invite people to your Workspace to do all of this for free.

More of Sketch, still just $99

This is the future of Sketch. The flexibility and accessibility of browser-based tools, with the power of a native Mac editor. Both sides have their benefits and Sketch now combines them. The result is a platform for the entire collaborative design process.

And with this, Sketch is now a $9 (monthly) or $99 (annual) subscription. This price includes all of the features we mentioned above — from live collaboration to developer handoff and a Workspace to store and share your work — as well as access to the Mac app and regular updates.

We can’t wait for you to try it. You can sign up for a 30-day trial without a credit card, and no limits on people or documents. And, if you currently have a license but want to collaborate better with Sketch, we’ve made it easy to get started.

We’re hugely excited about this new reality for Sketch and the potential it unlocks. We have some exciting features and integrations in the pipeline that we couldn’t have built before all of this, and we can’t wait to share these with you as the year progresses.
